Police appealed for alleged victims of the late prime minister Edward Heath to come forward yesterday in a dramatic escalation of the VIP child sex abuse inquiry. Heath, the Conservative prime minister from 1970 to 1974, became the most prominent figure to be accused of paedophilia as an inquiry was launched into claims of a police cover-up two decades ago. A retired officer has claimed that Wiltshire police aborted a criminal investigation in the mid-1990s after the female defendant in the case threatened to expose Heath as a child abuser.
